Öresund
QUICK FACTS
  • Öresund is a narrow strait - only 4km at its narrowest point, uniting Sweden and Denmark;
  • one of the World's busiest waterways;
  • one of the World's busiest international ferry routes, with more than 70 departures connecting Sweden and Denmark daily;
  • the most densely populated metropolitan area of the Nordic countries, app. 3.8 million people live along the shores of Öresund;
  • as late as the 1980s, Öresund or Sundet was almost dead due to heavy industrial pollution, non-regulated farming, uncontrolled raw sewage releases into the sea, abandoned fishing gear and heavy marine traffic;

Today, Öresund is seemingly an outlier, however fragile and has been described as “a kind of ‘island’ in a vast deteriorated sea”.
Yet, information about the successes and ongoing challenges remains limited to the general public.

THREE MISSIONS
MARINE RESEARCH & CONSERVATION
'ÖRESUND PATROL' is our action program for carrying out large-scale environmental and scientific projects in a citizen-science capacity and as a collaboration with universities, organisations, and institutions.
OCEAN LITERACY &
AWARENESS
Our knowledge-building program, 'MITT HAV', focuses on how crucial the ocean is to life on our planet and ocean literacy: understanding our influence on the ocean and the ocean's influence on us is critical to living and acting sustainably.
STEWARDSHIP &
ADVOCACY
'HAVET BEHÖVER OSS' is an umbrella term for our extensive and persistent advocacy for maritime policy change at the government level in Sweden and Denmark. We advocate for the creation of a Marine Protection Area around ÖRESUND.
Our large-scale awareness campaigns are aimed at the general public.

There are an estimated 6 million scuba divers worldwide, which means 99.9% of Earth’s population doesn’t see what divers do.
UW images play an integral part in helping the rest of the world see and understand the delicate beauty beneath the surface.
INTRODUCTION
The historical abundance of marine life and trade in salted herring, for example, created the very foundation for the prosperity of the region. However, the herring population eventually declined around the 1700s. As late as the 1980s, the Sound was almost dead due to heavy industrial pollution, non-regulated farming, uncontrolled raw sewage releases into the sea, abandoned fishing gear and heavy marine traffic.

Slowly over the years, there has been an awakening driven by scientists and researchers who have presented hard facts to politicians, stakeholders, enterprises and the general public. As a result, Öresund and the surrounding waters is undergoing a positive change today. Yet, the penetration of information to the general public (ca. 3.8 million) about the successes and ongoing challenges remains limited.

Given the high importance of this local ecosystem for marine biodiversity and society, its protection should be a priority. Ongoing activities like unsustainable fishing, sand dredging, land reclamation, and heavy maritime traffic threaten species and habitats, and some key communities have declined in recent decades (i.e. Haploops).
”ÖRESUND PATROL” will cover Öresund and The sea around the two peninsulas Kullahalvön and Bjärehalvön.
A stretch of coastline and the open ocean from Falsterbo and Måkläppens naturreservat, Malmö and Copenhagen in the south. And Hallands Väderö and up to BÅSTAD, and Gilbjerg Hoved in the north.
INCLUDING THE SKÅNSKA KATTEGATT NATURE RESERVE, ESTABLISHED IN 2020.
The Öresund or The Sound is a body of water forming the border between Sweden and Denmark; a narrow strait - only 4km at its narrowest point and with an average depth of only 12m is a complex area. A rocky peninsula marks the northernmost tip of the Öresund, Kullaberg Halvön, and the mixing of the saline Kattegatt Sea waters with the brackish Baltic Sea creates a rich marine environment with a high level of biodiversity, with intriguing marine communities and thriving habitats - extensive mussel beds, rocky stone reefs, swaying seagrass and a vast variation of kelp and seaweed, all cohabiting with crabs, fish, porpoises, tuna and other forms of marine animals.

Hallands Väderö, another nature reserve, forming a small group of islands northwest of Torekov, is home to a large seal colony, estimated at 1400 – 1600 seals, mainly consisting of harbour seals. The colony has grown continually since the harbour seal was protected by law in the 1960s.
SKÅNSKA KATTEGATT NATURE RESERVE
At 58,000 ha, Skånska Kattegatt is the second largest among Sweden's marine nature reserves. The area is of great importance for cod and porpoise, and the protection means that communities with bottom-dwelling animals such as barnacles, mussels and lobsters can develop naturally.
